Nature has created women and blessed her with distinct power. She is a source of strength and energy, always adding some new enrichment to the society. According to the studies, woman enjoyed equal status and rights during ancient period. However, later, the status of women began to decline. The Constitution of India guarantees to all Indian women equality, no discrimination by the state, equality of opportunity, equal pay for equal work. Even though, the Government has given more importance for the empowerment of women, the result was not sufficient. Without the empowerment of women, the nation’s development is not possible. Hence, considering this, the Government is trying for new policies, like, giving concession for education, especially for backward classes of women, free education for all female children up to degree level, education scholarship for single female child in a family for the empowerment of women. For the overall development of nation, the role of each and every woman is inevitable. Worldwide various plans and procedure which give more importance to woman were worked out in 1975. The salient features of the new education policy introduced a national co-curriculum at the college level in 1986, which gave special emphasis for the education of woman. Based on this, various branches of woman studies came up. Women studies were initially conceptualized as a branch of social science and humanities. However, today the women studies programme must link with the other disciplines and professions, in addition to social science and humanities. Including Women studies in the National policy of education, 1986, was a major initial task and as a result, many centers have been established in the Universities and college by the UGC.

Women’s Studies has gained an academic stature, and developed as a rich body of theories based on a complex and multilayered understanding of the realities of women’s lives. This rich materials needs to be introduced to the students in the class room. In the present scenario, in India, women have very important role to play. We are busy with our plans of national reconstruction, rural upliftment and all-round development of our country for its progress and its prosperity. Women have assumed more responsibilities not only of their families, but also, of the country and are contributing to the good governance of the world.

Keeping in line with the international movements of the non-governmental organizations of women all over the world, a forum named Women’s studies Units (WSU) had been founded in the college by the lady teachers. There are 52 lady teachers, 10 non-teaching staff and 2/3rd of total students are girls. Convener: Dr.Rekhasree K.R. (Dept. of Sociology), Co-ordinators: Smt. Manjary S. (Dept. of Zoology), Dr.Seetha Vijayakumar (Dept. of English), Treasurer: Smt.Remya Krishnan R. (Dept. of Economics). One teacher and two students from each department form the executive committee of the unit.

WSU of the college believes that an integral part of the development of women’s movement everywhere is the recognition and growth of women’s leadership both within institution and in society at large. Our prime aim is to empower women, which means

1. To make women aware about their social, cultural, economic, educational rights and to help them in their upliftment.
2. Bringing women to the main stream of the society.
